Type of strategy: Group Management

Used to reconvene a group after they have been engaged in an activity.

Directions: 

Establish the following procedure with participants prior to beginning activity.

  1. Facilitator raises her hand (or similar gesture that can be seen by group members) - Participants raise their hands
  2. Voices turn off turn when hands are raised
  3. Participant eyes and ears focus on facilitator

I have used this for many years. It works well when you teach, model, practice then expect students to follow it. It quickly becomes a habit, and kids like it because you’re not always verbally telling them to be quiet. It’s more calming and unobtrusive, yet effective.
