Lean, Look and Listen (Clam Up)

Type of strategy: Group Management

Attention getting strategy. Good for quickly helping students to hear new instructions and important info.

Practice gaining student attention by having students refocus by lowering their computer screens and directing their attention to the speaker.

Practice having side conversations and give a signal that will indicate that you need their attention and the amount of time it should take.

For students who do not have laptop computers you can say, Turn and Twiddle, which means that students will be looking away from their machines and have their hands occupied, to be sure they are not distracted by what is on their screens.
