"It’s not an exaggeration to say that proportional reasoning is critical for students’ academic and career success. In their report in the International Journal of STEM Education Alfieri et al. state that:

Proportional reasoning lays the foundation for further progress within mathematics. It is also necessary for success in a number of other domains (engineering, science, etc.). Furthermore, proportional reasoning is a life skill that helps with daily decision making, planning, etc. However, it is a skill that is complex and often difficult for students.

In their study, the team used our computer-based 3D game called Expedition Atlantis to focus students’ attention on key mathematics concepts, and motivate them to use the math properly. Overall, researchers found that using Expedition Atlantis helped improve the number of correct responses, the number of problems attempted, and the proportions of correct responses from pre- to post-test results. Additionally, students’ interest in robotics also increased, as did students’ valuing of mathematics within robotics."
