The Oregon state selection committee for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) has selected three outstanding secondary science/computer science teachers as a state-level finalist in the science award category. These science/computer science educators represent Oregon’s best.

• Mrs. Sarah Carlson, Condon High School, Condon, OR

• Mr. Jason Galbraith, Sunset High School, Beaverton, OR

• Ms. Kerryn Henderson, Parkrose High School, Portland, OR

Each state-level finalist is now a candidate for the state Presidential award; their application packets have been forwarded for judging at the national level. As the next part of the selection process, a prestigious national committee reporting the National Science Foundation will select one science teacher for the Oregon Presidential Award from the state-level finalists. The teacher selected as the state Presidential Awardee will be notified officially by the White House. Each state Presidential Awardee will receive $10,000 and an all-expense-paid trip for two to Washington, D.C., where Presidential Awardees will be honored in a variety of recognition events.

During the coming school year, the three state-level science finalists will be honored at a dessert reception awards ceremony at the Oregon Science Teachers Association Conference on Friday, October 11th from 6:00-9:00 PM at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR. Oregon Department of Education extends our heartiest personal congratulations to Mrs. Sarah Carlson, Mr. Jason Galbraith, and Ms. Kerryn Henderson for having been selected for this prestigious honor and in recognition of truly outstanding teaching and leadership in science/computer science education.

The nomination and application window for the 2020 PAEMST Award for K-6 science/computer science educators will open in the Fall.

Sincerely,
