Consultant James Sims, along with teachers Jennifer Smith, Dirk Bortz, and Superintendent Dianne Greif from the Elgin school district have been working with Michael Lindblad and Brian Putnam from the Oregon Department of Education to develop a Small School District Professional Learning Community (PLC) in NE Oregon. An ever expanding group of districts with singleton ELA and Math area secondary teachers have been gathering regularly on a face to face and via technology to improve professional practice and student success through commonly developed standards-based units of assessment and instruction. A major topic of discussion is the integral involvement needed by superintendents and principals and the specific roles they play. During the session, these educators will discuss the required components for a successful multi-district PLC as well as the barriers and challenges to implementation.
