Talking Race in the Borderlands Lecture Series
Recentering Race in the Indigenous Maya Linguistic Borderlands
Dr. Patricia Baquedano-López, UC-Berkeley

In this talk, I examine the relationship between language and race in Indigenous Maya borderlands work. Examples from interviews with Mayan parents and students illustrate how ideologies of language purism are tied to notions of indigeneity and race. These ideologies continue to be part of the imperial transit that centers notions of purity and constructs linguistic peripheries and passages, in this case from Castilian Spanish as the ideal white norm.
