09/24/2020 - 12:00pm

Grade levels: Professional Development, Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Content areas: Professional Development

District/Organization: edWeb

As we build from recent learning loss and adapt to a virtual context, we must focus our attention on helping students increase knowledge through vocabulary acquisition. Core vocabulary words are critical for children to comprehend texts, communicate effectively, and become independent thinkers. As students learn the distinctive and nuanced meanings represented by words and make connections about how words work, they become better readers with enriched vocabulary. Words connect concepts to ideas, ideas to knowledge, and ultimately connect children to the world around them.

In this edWebinar, Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert, Author of Scholastic W.O.R.D., will discuss:
Why core vocabulary is the answer to deepening comprehension in a virtual context
How learning the meanings behind core words in thematic texts leads to background knowledge
Why it is more important now than ever to focus on words and how they work
How to supercharge vocabulary by teaching word families and networks of words
How to build vocabulary in service of knowledge, with personalized, digital instruction

This edWebinar will be of interest to preK-5 teachers, librarians, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
